Hon’ble National President of Bharatiya Janata Party and Union Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda paid floral tribute to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his ‘Balidan Diwas’
On the 72nd ‘Balidan Diwas’ of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a stalwart of India’s unity and integrity, BJP National President and Union Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda paid floral tribute at his statue at the party’s central office in New Delhi. On behalf of himself and millions of BJP karyakartas, Shri Nadda offered heartfelt homage to Dr. Mookerjee. Remembering Dr. Mookerjee’s immense contribution to the nation’s unity and progress, Shri Nadda said that he made the supreme sacrifice while opposing Articles 370 and 35A, which granted special status to Jammu-Kashmir. Dr. Mookerjee passed away under mysterious circumstances in Srinagar jail. Even his mother had demanded an inquiry into his death, but the appeal was ignored by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A under the decisive leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji was a historic step and a true tribute to Dr. Mookerjee’s vision and sacrifice.
Shri Nadda stated that on the occasion of the 72nd ‘Balidan Diwas’ of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, BJP karyakartas across the country are organizing tribute events at various locations. Born in Bengal, Dr. Mookerjee played a pivotal role in India’s independence and in shaping the identity of today’s India. His contribution was especially crucial in ensuring that regions like West Bengal, Punjab, and Assam became and remained integral parts of the nation. A man of exceptional intellect and versatility, Dr. Mookerjee was appointed vice-chancellor of Calcutta University at just 33 years of age. He later entered the legislative assembly and served United Bengal. After independence, Dr. Mookerjee became a minister in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s first cabinet. However, ideological differences and his opposition to Nehru’s appeasement policies led him to resign from the post. He went on to establish the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and was one of its founding member.
BJP National President Nadda recalled that after founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee vehemently opposed the special status granted to Jammu-Kashmir. Dr. Mookerjee gave the slogan, “Ek desh mein do nishan, do vidhan, aur do pradhan nahi chalenge,” and launched a movement against it. At that time, entry into Jammu and Kashmir required a special permit. Defying this rule, Dr. Mookerjee set out for the state on May 11 without seeking permission. He was arrested at the border and imprisoned in Srinagar. Tragically, on June 23, 1953, exactly 72 years ago, Dr. Mookerjee lost his life under mysterious circumstances in custody. His death remains surrounded by unanswered questions. Although the Bharatiya Jana Sangh was a small organization then, it raised a strong voice over the incident, and the opposition demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.
Shri Nadda shared that Dr. Mookerjee’s mother had written to then PM Pt. Nehru demanding an investigation into her son’s untimely and mysterious death, but her appeal was ignored. In the aftermath, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh took the movement forward with renewed determination. Rallies like the ‘Ekta Yatra’ and ‘Janadesh Yatra’ were launched under the banner of the iconic slogan, “Ek desh mein do nishan, do vidhan, do pradhan nahi chalenge,” keeping the spirit of protest against Article 370 alive across decades. Every BJP karyakarta feels immense pride that on August 6, 2019, under the decisive leadership and resolve of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and the strategic execution by Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, Article 370 was finally abolished in Parliament, offering a true tribute to Dr. Mookerjee’s vision and sacrifice.
BJP National President affirmed that today, we collectively resolve to ensure that tragic and mysterious incidents like the death of Dr. Mookerjee are never repeated. Under the strong and visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the nation must continue to grow stronger so that the voice of democracy remains vibrant and unshakable. This mission is a shared commitment, and millions of dedicated BJP karyakartas are honoring Dr. Mookerjee’s legacy by advancing his vision and walking the path he laid before us.
