Memorandum submitted by Manipur BJP
From Our Correspondent

Manipur BJP has submitted a Memorandum to the President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the Home Minister Shri Shivraj Patil on prevailing situation in Manipur. The situation in Manipur is grave even after temporary suspension of economic blockade. A BJP delegation comprising BJP Vice President Shri Thavar Chand Gehlot, Manipur BJP president Shri Chaoba Singh, Leader of Opposition Shri R K Dorendro Singh, Party In Charge of North eastern States Shri V Satish and many others called on the President in New Delhi on 26th August and met the Home Minister on 24th August expressing their deep concern over the situation in Manipur and demanded his immediate intervention.

The 52 day long economic blockade imposed by the All Naga Students' Association of Manipur (ANSAM) was suspended on August 11, 2005. Since then the Government is busy holding talks with the leaders of ANSAM and it has created a sense of panic among Manipuri people as the people are not sure of the outcome of the ongoing talks.

Blaming the Manipur State Government headed by Shri O. Ibobi Singh and the UPA Government at the Centre for the economic blockade in the State the BJP has called suspension of the economic blockade a " Stop gap arrangement". Expressing the apprehensions in the minds of Manipuri people it further said that the people of Manipur needed reassurance from the Government that their territorial integrity would be protected at all cost.

BJP leaders also expressed their concern over grim law and order situation in Manipur in spite of the presence of Army. "The common man on the streets feels helpless" as the State has failed miserably to protect the life and property of the people. "Cases of extortion, kidnapping, killing, threatening, forcible tax collections are ever increasing," said the BJP leaders.

BJP has cautioned that there is urgent need to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur taking all necessary steps to this end and people in State should not be left to the mercy of the underground outfits. Party leaders also urged the Government to issue specific order to take up the development work of National Highway No. 53 without further delay.
