Legislative Council biennial elections
BJP registers impressive victory
From Our Correspondent

In the last elections to Karnataka assembly, Bharatiya Janata Party had been voted into the single largest party in the House. In the biennial elections to the Legislative Council in Karnataka it once again proved its supremacy by winning four of the six seats for which results were declared on June 18. Two of the BJP candidates who sailed through are Higher Education Minister Shri D.H. Shankaramurthy and Science and Technology Minister Shri Ramachandra Gowda.

Shri Ramachandra Gowda has won for the fourth time from Bangalore Graduates Constituency. As for the Congress, it made it to the second place in South-West Graduates Constituency with its candidate Shri A.N. Mahesh (4,146 votes) trailing behind BJP candidate Shri Shankaramurthy who secured 14,633 votes.

In the North-East Graduates Constituency too, BJP candidate Shri Manohar Maski defeated Shri Koralli Suryakant of the Congress hands down. In the South-East Teachers Constituency, independent candidate Shri Y.A. Narayanaswamy won securing 8,170 votes, followed by Janata Dal (S) candidate A.B. Jayanna who got 3,510 votes. In the Southwest Teachers Constituency, while BJP candidate Capt. Karnik took 50 per cent of the votes polled, the Janata Dal (S) candidate Shri P. Vagesh came second with 2,470 votes, followed by Shri Ramalingappa, the Congress candidate, who got 1,513 votes.

In the South Teachers Constituency, the independent candidate Shri Marithibbe Gowda won by a margin of 913 votes. Even Shri Marithibbe Gowda’s victory could only be bad news for the Congress, as he was a rebel candidate of the party.
