Special on Shri Guruji’s Janamshtabdi

Standing witness to
Shri Guruji’s nirvana
Reminiscences of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee

When we all entered his room in the morning at breakfast time, Shri Guruji was sitting on a chair. I stretched my hand to touch his feet. As usual, he dragged his feet backwards. Swamsevaks who had come with me were introduced. One of them was a doctor who came from Adilabad. Then Shri Guruji narrated a story in lighter vein. A patient went to a doctor. The doctor asked: What is your problem, tell me in detail.

The patient got annoyed and said, “If I have to tell you everything, then what kind of treatment would you provide? I need a doctor who should judge the disease without being explained”. The doctor kept quiet for a while and then replied, “Wait, let me call another doctor for you.” The doctor came but he was a veterinary doctor. He understood everything without being told.

Everybody burst into laughter listening to the story. Our feeling of tiredness disappeared in a moment. We felt fresh despite having kept awake the whole night. Guruji himself joined us in this mirth. He narrated another story. We all laughed heartily at that one too.

In the meantime tea was served. He himself ensured that everyone of us got tea. Who liked tea and who preferred milk, he knew it all. He took tea last of all. There was just a few drops of tea in the cup. Even that he got reduced. He had perhaps taken that much tea just to give us company. He was experiencing a great difficulty in gulping anything. He was feeling severe pain while breathing.

But his face reflected spontaneous, sweet smile. His heart had winsome humor. Bristling laughter that rejuvenated a pale heart. He had indomitable self-confidence that kicked out feelings of despondency, hopelessness and despair.

Death seemed to be in waiting for him somewhere in a corner of that room. The body was giving way. The auspicious moment for salvation seemed to be near. For a moment I felt as if Bhishmapitamah was lying on a bed of arrows waiting for death. I had only heard of persons wish their death and getting it. Today I saw it.

In the evening he was told to say his prayers seated on his chair and at 9:05 pm he left this world for his heavenly abode.
