Bharatiya Janata Party National President Shri Amit Shah, addressed an Intellectual meet in Kolkata today. He discussed several issues on the development work done by the Bharatiya Janata Party government under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the Centre. He also questioned the politics of appeasement by the West Bengal Chief Minster Ms. Mamata Banarjee. Shri Shah is on a three-day visit to West Bengal as part of his 110-day nationwide tour to cover all the states of our country.

Hitting out hard at the Trinamool Congress Government in West Bengal for its gross failure in ensuring development and law and order in the state, Shri Shah said that Mamata Banarjee has been indulging in the politics of appeasement and vote-bank and has derailed the state’s growth and development. The BJP president reminded that Shir Narendra Modi led BJP Government at the centre has allocated huge money to West Bengal for the development and growth of the state, whereas the Trinamool Congress dispensation fared poorly in providing people with basic needs of the people such as safe drinking water, power, employment and health facilities.

Shri Shah said that the people of West Bengal had elected Ms Mamata Banerjee to get rid of violence, poverty and unemployment while reestablishing the pride of Bengal. Has the pride of Bengal reestablished in the world? Has the violence stopped? Has the poverty reduced? Has the glory of Bengal’s and art and culture re-established during the last seven years of Mamata dispensation, the party president asked.

Exhorting Bengali intellectuals to set aside their habit of repeating governments, the BJP president said that the time has now come for the Bengali Bhadralok to be decisive and raise questions over the rights of the poor, their votes and Bengal’s future. Reiterating that his party is not against any community, Shri Shah said that the bordering districts of West Bengal today has been reached to a situation where they were during troublesome partition days. Expressing concern over national security, he said that bomb explosions, fake currency, smuggling of cows are new norm in these districts.

The overall situation has reached to such a point that the people had to seek Court’s intervention to ensure immersion of Durga idols as per their rituals. What kind of society we are heading to be where our own traditions are being opposed, he said. It has been a common practice across the country that processions of different religions passes harmoniously, but this cannot happen in West Bengal not because of fear of Hindu Muslim riots but entirely due to politics of appeasement and vote- bank.

The BJP president said that in 13th Finance commission under Dr Manmohan Singh led UPA, share of West Bengal in central taxes was merely Rs. 13,539 crore. The Modi Government has hiked it to Rs 2,89,000 crore in the 14th Finance Commission, which is almost three times more than what the previous regime sanctioned, the party president informed. The Modi Government hiked Grant in aid from Rs 9,520 crore to Rs 34,732 crore whereas the Revenue Deficit Grant which was zero earlier has been fixed at Rs 11,760 crore. Local Body Grant has been also been hiked to Rs 20,832 crore from Rs 1,444 crore whereas the total allocation to the state has been raised to Rs 3,59,406 crore from Rs 1,32,783, he explained. Also, a whopping Rs 29,000 crore has been sanctioned under Mudra loan scheme whereas Rs 24,705 crore has been sanctioned under various central Government schemes and Rs 21,345 crore has been provided through e-tendering of mines.

Shri Shah said that he has given a detailed account of central assistance the Modi Government providing to the West Bengal government. Now Mamata Banerjee should answer where has all the money gone. Why there is no power in Bengal villages? Why is literacy sliding and why Industries are avoiding Bengal, the BJP president said.

Stressing on the need to restore the pre-independence glory of Bengal, Shri Shah said that Bengal gave us greatest personalities such as Swami Vivekanand, Ramkrishna Paramhams, Rabindranath Tagore, Ram Mohan Roy, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Bankim Chandra Chaterjee. These towering persons reinvigorated the Bengali pride and intellect. Where does Bengal stand today? This is a place where revolution and freedom struggle were born and whose literature and Rabindra Sangeet mesmerized the whole world, Shri Shah said. Nowhere in the world does the political violence take place as it does in West Bengal. Is it the kind of Bengal Swami Vivekanad and Rabindranath Tagore had dreamt. It will be better for those involve in violence. No one can stop rise of the BJP with resorting to violence. Champions of human rights should report on the political violence taking place in Kolkata, Bashihaat and Birbhum. Is it not human right violation, Shri Shah asked. The BJP cadre will firmly struggle against this violence and tyranny, Shri Shah said.

Shri Shah said that the BJP Government believes in taking decisions which are good to the people and not the populist ones which only seem good. It is easy to take populist decisions and create vote-bank politics but it needs courage to take bold decisions and the Modi Government took bold decision with courage and conviction.

He said that in the last three years of Bharatiya Janata Party Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has become the fastest growing economy in the world. The Prime Minister has provided India a corruption free, transparent and decisive government. Shri Narendra Modi had made it clear while taking oath of his office as Prime Minister that his government would be dedicated to the welfare of the villages, poor, Dalits, Backward and Tribals of the country and the Government has been working for this purpose for three years. Recalling 10 years of chaotic UPA rule the BJP president said that under Mrs. Sonia Gandhi led Congress government, the economy was plummeting, , fiscal-deficit was high and inflation was sky rocketing. During Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee Government the whole world had started to believe that the 21st century belongs to India. However 10 years of despair under UPA regime upturned the upbeat global mood and analyst started describing Indian growth story to be finished.

The BJP president said that under Mrs. Sonia Gandhi led Congress government in the country there were scams to the tune of around Rs12 lakh crore. Every Congress minister used to consider himself the Prime Minister while nobody listened to the Prime Minister. There was a policy paralysis prevailing in the country. It was in this gloomy scenario that the people of this great country decided to elect a full majority decisive Modi Government after 30 years. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has brought revolutionary changes in Governance during the three years in office, the party President said.

He said that in three years of BJP government under Prime Minister has tried to abolish the politics of casteism, corruption and appeasement and encouraged and established the politics of performance. Even our staunchest opponents could not level a single allegation of corruption against our government, the BJP President said.

With the launch of104 satellites together in the space, India has emerged as a global space power, he said while emphasizing that through the Ujjwala scheme, gas cyllinders have been transported to the homes of about 2.80 crore poor household in the country. Women have been given the right to live with dignity by constructing more than four crore toilets. By opening a bank account of about 29 crore people, the Modi Government brought has 60 crore people into the mainstream economic system, the BJP president said.

He said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gave India a new recognition adding that government has been working at fast pace to achieve the goal of doubling the income of the farmers by 2022 through schemes such as Prime Minister Crop Insurance, Soil Health Cards, Neem Coated Urea, Irrigation Scheme and e-Mandis. I can count at least 50 historic decisions being taken by the Modi Government in just three years whereas so many Governments together could not take as many decisions, Shri Shah added.

Shri Shah said that, Prime Minister Shri Naredra Modi has changed the scale of thinking. While no Prime Minister cared about constructing toilets in every house and delivering LPG cylinder to every household, Shri Modi successfully implemented them. When we came to power, LPG connections in the country were just 12.5 crore out of which11.80 crore were in the urban areas, he pointed out adding that this meant that villagers did not have access to the clean cooking fuel. We have considerably controlled the spiraling prices essential commodities whereas economic indicators are improving fast.

With the introduction of crucial tax reform in the form of GST, the dream of 'one nation, one tax' has come true, he said. Shri Shah praised the strict action taken against black money along with the demonetization, benami property law, campaign against shell companies and premature cancellation of Mauritius-Cyprus-Singapore treaties. He said that the surgical strike has changed the world view about our country. BJP president said that the government has given major relief to the poor people through making available generic medicines and slashing the prices of stent apart from knee transplant. To curb the black money intruding into politics even the political parties have been disciplined, he pointed out. Now Political parties can take only Rs 2,000 cash whereas earlier it was Rs 20,000.

The Modi Government has resolved a decade old issue pertaining to OROP with Rs. 8,500 crore being spent annually towards retired jawans. The issue was pending for 40 years, but our government executed the scheme within a year and benefitted thousands of retired soldiers, the BJP President stated. Out of 19 thousand villages with no electricity, even after 70 years of independence, 13,500 villages have already been electrified and the rest would be electrified by 2018.
