The Congress party which swears by Gandhian principles espousing to embrace his values have chosen to demolish all the cardinal principles of austerity. The twitter of the Union Minister for External Affairs has blatantly insulted and tantalized a large middle class ostensibly mocking their austere lifestyle. Mr. Throor has termed economy class in airlines as a “Cattle Class” which outrightly smacks the insensitivity of the minister pounding the feelings and respect of a common traveller. This tantamounts to a deep injury to the self-respect and esteem of millions who travel economy class. The statement of Mr. Throor gives a display of unprecedented arrogance which in a way has been usually witnessed in the congress party.

The claims by honchos of the congress party has completely shredded their austerity claims as evident from the reports appearing today. The Congress General Secretary Mr. Rahul Gandhi has indulged exactly contrary to what he has publically postured. His recent political tour to Tamilnadu has cost more than a crore which outrightly demolishes his tall claim of austerity. Mr. Rahul Gandhi would like to explain how does this one crore expenditure fit into his loud claims of austerity. The Congress Leaders including Chairperson of Congress party Smt. Sonia Gandhi and CWC members have been tom-tomming austerity, which is a typical hypocrisy attempting to score political brownie points on human emotions. In the backdrop of extensive draught gripping the country and whopping food grain prices burdening every household, such symbolic austerity claims is a design to distract the nation. The Indian people are far too aware of this double speak of the Congress party.

While the BJP will welcome any austerity initiatives at the policy level such as endeavoured during the NDA rule by bringing the 91st constitutional amendment in 2003 restricting the strength of Cabinet Ministers in government both at the center and at the state level, initiative a long-term system austerity saving hundreds of crore of public exchequer. It would be desirable if the government refrains from hoodwinking and gets into the serious business of reducing prices of food items. It would be worthwhile if the UPA government stopped further lip service and chest thumping of austerity for sundry political gains.
