The statement made by the Victorian Police Commissioner is ridiculous and outlandish suggesting that Indian students should visibly look poor, if they want to remain safe in Australia. With a deep sense of pain and concern Bharatiya Janata Party would like to ask whether Australia as a Nation subscribes to such statements, which has undoubtedly shaken up the international community. Has the Australian law and order system collapsed completely compelling the authorities to make such bizarre remarks .We are shocked at the present situation prevailing in Australia. Does the Australian government intend depicting that the rich, affluent and the presentable are targets and not safe in their country, a philosophy which has stunned everyone. With such a remark how can the Australian government extricate itself from the charge that it is not a racist country. More than hundred attacks in last one year, couple of them being fatal while leaving several injured and yet the Australian Government has not been visibly forthcoming. It is indeed a matter of concern that Indian students crossing over a lakh constitute the second largest student population after the Chinese where they only remain vulnerable and fortunately no other community has been targeted or an incident reported so far. In all this the response of the Indian Government has been extremely lackadaisical and disappointing. (Shyam Jaju)
