The price rise in food sector is the biggest scam of UPA, which has allowed speculators to loot the country by manipulating food prices. It is not the case of real shortages but it is a case of large scale hoarding and jacking up prices through commodity exchange. The farmers and consumers are exploited and only speculators are benefiting. Govt. has become mute spectator and not showing any real interest in any serious action on this front. The Govt. has no political will to bring down the prices as the ruling party has received large election funds from these speculators. Congress should not think that the recent electoral success is mandate for allowing price rise. BJP warns the Govt. that it will face the wrath of the people if it fails to take immediate steps and curb the price rise.
It is ironical that when the world is witnessing slump in food prices, India is witnessing a rise of 17%. It is also irony, that while the sugar is being sold at Rs. 40 per KG and Jaggery at Rs. 50, the sugarcane growers in UP are burning their standing crop because they are not getting remunerative prices. Policies of the UPA Govt. are directly responsible for this situation. Last year agriculture ministry declared that sugar is available in abundance and allowed exports, knowing fully well that there will be short supply this year. As a result we exported 48 Lakh Tons of sugar at Rs. 12 last year and within six months we are now importing 70 Lakh Tons of sugar at Rs. 27 per KG. This is the scam, which needs to be probed by CBI.
UPA Govt. converted self sufficiency in edible oil and made India into a net import dependant country. Today we are importing 50% of our requirement mainly from Malaysia. UPA Govt. is guilty of killing the oil seed farming and edible oil industry in the country. UPA destroyed the PDS and reduced the quantities of food grains to the poor from 35 kg per month to merely 15-20 kg per month. It allowed private companies to purchase food grains directly from farmers and further allowed implicitly to hoard and to profit.
BJP demands • CBI Enquiry in sugar scam • Amendment in the hoarding rules • Supply of pulses, edible oil, wheat, rice and sugar at reasonable prices through PDS by giving subsidy. • Govt. should declare long term agriculture pricing and market pricing policy. • Ban on forward trading in all food items including spices on commodity exchange.
