statement issued by Bharatiya Janata Party President Shri Rajnath Singh has condemned the inhuman treatment meted out to the Trinamul Congress President, Ms Mamata Banerjee by the Police in West Bengal yesterday. Ms. Banerjee was staging a peaceful dharna against the forcible acquisition of farmlands at Singur in Hoogly District of West Bengal. The act of Police barbarism on a leader, and also a woman, agitating for the cause of poor farmers has exposed the real face of the Left Government in West Bengal. Now it has become evident that the Left Government has no respect for poor farmers, democratic values and dignity of women. Ms. Banerjee is not only our ally but also an icon of peoples' struggle against the oppressive Communist rule in West Bengal. There has been a marked increase in the incidents of farmers' harassment and disrespect to democratic practices in the country, ever since the UPA-Left combine has been sharing power at the Centre. This episode is another addition in the same series of incidents. We strongly condemn this undemocratic and unruly behaviour of the West Bengal Government and express our solidarity with Ms Mamata Banerjee and farmers of Hoogly.
