Press Statement issued by BJP National Spokesperson
Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad

The BJP is deeply concerned not only on conflicting but also comical views emerging from different higher quarters of the government about the role of Pakistan in the Mumbai blasts. This comical ambivalence highlights more serious malaise namely adhoc sectarian and myopic management of our internal security, which has caused a great deal of discomfort to our security forces.

Let us only recall the swinging pendulum:

  1. Pakistan is behind Mumbai blasts – Prime Minister
  2. Pakistan is victim of terror and terrorists groups are autonomous – Prime Minister
  3. Pakistan should walk the talk and joint anti-terrorism mechanism is the correct instrument – Prime Minister
  4. There is no clinching evidence about the role of ISI/Pakistan in Mumbai blasts – National Security Advisor
  5. We have solid evidence against ISI role in Mumbai blasts – Home Secretary
  6. We have credible evidence against Pakistan/ISI in their role in Mumbai blasts – Prime Minister
  7. The ISI has spread its network wide and far including infiltration in Indian Army – Ex-Defence Minister
  8. We must experiment the joint anti-terrorist mechanism as we are not going to war with Pakistan – Prime Minister
  9. Armed Forces should be ready for a mini war – Home Minister

One fails to understand as to what impression one would have from these vacillations being indulged at the highest level on the issue of terrorism, which has direct bearing on our security arrangements. This flip-flop has naturally emboldened President Musharraf, who has now publicly commented that, "India should first set their house in order before pointing fingers at Pakistan regarding terrorism".

Naturally this creepy uncertainty at the highest level continues to give leverage to Pakistan to indulge in their design to foment, encourage and sponsor cross border terrorism at great risk to our national security. BJP demands that the UPA government must put an end to playing havoc with the national security.
