Press Release

New Delhi: November 13, 2006: The BJP National President Shri Rajnath Singh said that the recent attempt by the UPA Government to provide reservation for Muslims & Christians under the disguise of Veerappa Moiley Committee recommendation is another shameful attempt to induct communal reservation despite clear & categorical rejection by the court in the case of Andhra Pradesh government's decision to provide reservation for minorities.

The socially & educationally deprived sections of minority community are already benefited in the ambit of OBC categories. We are in favour of justice to all the deprived sections of society including those of minority communities, but any attempt to provide reservation to the follower of an entire religion seems non-substantive and misleading.

The Government should also clarify that since the constitutional limit of 50% reservation is already exhausted, how can they provide new reservation. The government can only plan to provide reservation to minorities cutting the share of SC/ST or OBC. Any curtailment of the quota of SC/ST or OBC for the sake of minority votes is not acceptable to BJP. Previously government had already deprived the SC & OBC students from the reservation in minority institutions.

From Muslim head count in the army, to the attempt to give communal reservation in an university and in the government sector & even in private sector, government seems to be suffering from the obsession of minoritism.

Even after 90 years of historical blunder of providing legislative reservations to Muslims in Lucknow Congress session of 1916, which eventually led to the partition of country, the Congress is unable to learn a lesson, rather than it seems to be putting its foot in the shoes of Muslim League.

Shri Rajnath Singh said that the dwindling mass base of the Congress as a result of its policies on internal security, price, farmer's suicide and agrarian crisis resulting into total failure have lead them to stop thinking in national interest. Shri Singh said that as a result of partition of India on religious basis the founding fathers of the Constitution had abandoned the idea of granting reservation on religious basis. The Congress must desist from its wishes balkanizing agenda as it not going to fetch them the ground, they are loosing fast.

Any attempt to provide reservation on communal lines is not only unconstitutional but also detrimental to the social fabric of India.

The BJP National President Shri Rajnath Singh has asked the Congress and others to desist from agendas, which are blatantly anti-constitutional, divisive and fomenting religious animosity. The people of the country will neither relish nor allow it to happen and BJP will block it at every point.
