Statement of Ravi Shankar Prasad,
MP & National Spokesperson, BJP

1. The BJP has been of the considered view that important and high constitutional posts in the country must be held by people of Indian origin. The Constitution framers had not even remotely thought that one day, a person of non-Indian origin, because of matrimonial alliance or otherwise in a "family", would aspire to hold any top constitutional post in the country. Now that the Hon'ble Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the matter, the only hope and trust is that this issue of seminal constitutional importance affecting the current and future polity of the country, would be determined conclusively, and what is latent in our constitutional scheme would be made patent.

Even otherwise, now it again provides an occasion for all political parties to sit across and decide this question politically as well, in consensus. However, the most important point remains, can the Congress Party dare to take lead in this regard.

2. It is evidently clear that Prime Ministerial sycophancy of the dynasty is now seriously impinging upon the limits of political civility. Now it even extends to not only condoning but even approving the instances of political naiveté and diplomatic faux pas by the “heir apparent” Rahul Gandhi. We had called Dr. Manmohan Singh an invisible Prime Minister earlier. We regret to say that he does not want to be visible as the effective Prime Minister of a great nation, but as a person who could not resist competitive courtierism about the dynasty in spite of the exalted office he holds. All this in spite of the arrogant and repeated claim by Shri Rahul Gandhi that it is only the "family", which can deliver. Obviously it means no one else, which includes Dr. Manmohan Singh as well.
